Service Members Receive Financial Support from House for Extended Stop-Loss Orders Members of the House of Representatives are showing their support for troops required to stay on active duty on extended leave by stop-loss orders by cosponsoring a bill aimed at providing them extra pay. The bill, backed by 21 House members, calls for an additional $1,500 to be provided to troops on involuntary extended leave each month of extended service. In May of this year, Democratic Rep. Betty Sutton asked the Army to cease its use of the stop-loss program by sponsoring a nonbinding resolution. Sutton is the chief sponsor of the bill. “After honorably serving their country, too many of our brave service men and women are being told they cannot return home to their families when scheduled, instead being forced to serve additional tours of duty. This is unjust and it undermines the voluntary nature of the military.” For Sutton and her fellow House bill supporters, the logic behind stop-loss makes sense, but she believes the end result may actually deter men and women from enlisting.
