Success for New GI Bill as Bush Veto is Withdrawn As the threat of President Bush’s veto loomed ominously over the heads of supporters of the New GI Bill, tensions were high. The bill will increase veterans’ abilities to receive education from accredited institutions of higher learning. After passing the House and the Senate, the fate of the bill rested in the hands of the President, where it awaited the verdict on a veto. Veterans can breathe a little easier now. After grueling interactions between the House of Representatives and the White House, the Bush Administration decided to withdraw their objections to the bill. The new bill includes every aspect of its original version, now referred to as the Montgomery GI Bill, but also allows service members to pass their benefits onto spouses or dependents. This new bill is a landmark event for the military and guarantees veterans the right to an affordable education. The bill will cover partial or complete college tuitions and fees for eligible participants. This coming Saturday the 22nd serves as the 64 year anniversary of the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt first signed the original GI Bill into law. It is a commemorative moment and a great step forward for our service members and their families. President Roosevelt is quoted as saying the bill “gives emphatic notice to the men and women in armed forces that the American people do not intend to let them down.” MilitaryConnection.com is a portal of all things military.
