Sportable’s Adaptive Programs

Sportable began as a VCU school project led by two certified therapeutic recreation specialists and with vision, teamwork and community support has grown into the respected nonprofit adaptive sports organization that it is today. Inspired to address the unmet need for sports programming for persons living with a physical disability or visual impairment in the greater Richmond area, Sportable offers 13 adaptive sports programs annually to athletes ages 5 through adult, unique sports clinics and special events for our athletes, families and community partners. Sportable boasts over 25 partnerships which support our mission, including: the Richmond Maguire VA Hospital, Sportsbackers, the Virginia Boat Club, the Richmond Kickers soccer association, the Greater Richmond YMCA, and many more. Sportable’s 13 adaptive programs are as follows:

  • Wheelchair Basketball
  • Power Wheelchair Soccer
  • Kayaking
  • Rowing
  • Cycling
  • Tennis
  • Air Rifle
  • Archery
  • Fencing
  • Lacrosse
  • Paratriathalon
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Swimming
  • Track Club

By looking beyond ones physical limitations and focusing on their abilities, Sportable continues to address its primary mission of creating opportunities and transforming lives. Believing no one should be left on the sidelines Sportable endeavors to see all of our athletes succeed in a variety of competitive sports opportunities, while also providing an outlet for socialization. Embracing a team culture our values include: integrity, passion, team spirit, and ingenuity. These value assist the Sportable team in fulfilling the organization’s brand pillars: freeing athletes to see beyond their disabilities, building peer relationships, reducing social isolation, facilitating physical and attitudinal change in the community, and ultimately improving the quality of life for all of our athletes.

Successful Mission Moment: a 60 year old Vietnam veteran double-leg amputee who participated in the strength and conditioning program surpassed his fitness goals and after just 12 weeks had doubled the amount of push-ups he was able to do. Meeting his long term goal of returning to competitive sport, this athlete eventually began participating in wheelchair tennis competitions after a 10 year hiatus! He continues to compete, as well as mentor new Sportable athletes.
