Holiday Gift List – The best gifts for soldiers and veterans in 2021
Close to 170,000 U.S. troops are currently deployed, which means that nearly 170,000 American men and women will be far from home, far from loved ones, and far from the comfort of their holiday traditions this December. For these brave service members, there is nothing quite like a thoughtful package from home. Here’s everything you need to know about sending military care packages for the holidays.
Wouldn’t it be a bummer if your thoughtfully curated, beautifully wrapped holiday care package didn’t survive the trip overseas? Here are a few tips to ensure your gift has the best chance of arriving as intended.
Under normal circumstances, military care packages must be sent a couple of weeks in advance to ensure timely arrival overseas; however, shipping delays are a major concern as of late. As you plan, consider delivery timing for your military care package kit. USPS shipping dates for holiday military mail will give you your deadlines. Many packages must be sent by December 9th to ensure they arrive by December 25th.

Military families face similar challenges to most other working American families, but have the added stress of deployments, frequent moves, a lack of certainty or control, and caring for ill or injured loved ones. Joining Forces, the new White House military initiative headed by First Lady Jill Biden, takes aim at this disparity by means of support for those who support our military.
The following groups are targeted for support from Joining Forces: Veterans and their families, active-duty military and their families, caregivers, and survivors of those who served. To start, the initiative will focus on employment and entrepreneurship, education, and wellbeing, with potential to expand in the future.
It can be difficult for military spouses to secure employment due to frequent moves, licensing costs, and childcare needs among other contributing factors. Joining Forces will work with government, non-profit, and private sector officials to create more flexible, transferable, and remote job opportunities for military spouses.
Deployments, PCS moves, and OCONPCS moves all have an impact on the educational experience of military children. The plan is to advance programming which supports these children while easing the burden of a military lifestyle.
As a nation, we have experienced ongoing warfare for the past twenty years – longer than any other period of conflict in U.S. history. These circumstances weigh heavily on the lives of military families, especially, and can lead to physical and mental health challenges. The Joining Forces program plans to work with civilian providers to offer additional support for military and veteran families, caregivers, and survivors.
Over the coming years, Frist Lady Biden plans to continue her collaboration with government, private sector, and non-profit partners to enhance the current offerings of Joining Forces while enacting additional long-term solutions to address the imbalances in the lives of military families.

October 26th is National Day of the Deployed. This military-based day of recognition pays tribute to deployed Americans in every corner of the world as well as the stateside families who are equally impacted. The sacrifices made for their country by these service members and their families are enormous and well deserving of this day in their honor.
Deployed troops leave their loved ones behind to live in an unfamiliar setting, often putting their lives on the line in the process. If you’d like to recognize their service and sacrifice, consider doing so in any of the following ways:
National Day of the Deployed was founded by Shelle Michaels Aberle in 2006 as a way of supporting her cousin, David Hosna, who was deployed at the time. Shelle started this day of awareness by approaching her governor, who agreed to issue a statewide proclamation recognizing Mr. Hosna’s birthday (October 26th) as their state’s first Day of the Deployed.
In 2011, Senator John Hoeven led the charge to recognize this day on a national level. On October 18th of the same year, the resolution passed unanimously. October 26, 2012 was the first National Day of the deployed, and now this day of honor is observed by all 50 states.
