MilitaryConnection: Portraying Women in Combat

By Debbie Gregory.

Women have been involved in the U.S. military since 1775, but more in the civilian fields of nursing, laundering and mending clothing, and cooking. In 1917, Loretta Walsh became the first woman to enlist. But it was not until 1948 that a law was finally passed that made women a permanent part of the military services.

Currently, you can find over 2 million women Veterans and current active women members of the Armed Forces. These women are hardly thought of when the normal civilian population thinks of the military. Now, its time for all of that to change; for good.

NBC is introducing a new show called American Odyssey. The television show, based on Sgt. Odelle Ballard, is representing Women Warriors. In the role of Ballard, actress played by Anna Friel is bringing attention to the women who serve this country. American Odyssey hopes to help change the perception of the women who fight for our country’s freedom, #WomenWarriors. The hashtag is representative of real life women warriors that NBC will be honoring at nationwide screening ahead of the series premiere in April.

But NBC cannot do this job alone! They need your help with the nomination process. Help them find the 100 deserving women Veterans, around the country, and create a social media takeover with #WomenWarriors.

The first 10-15 qualified nominees, per location, will be selected as the honorees. If you have someone you would like to nominate, please visit http://bit.ly/1AZ67rKand complete the submission form.

All of the screenings will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 7:30pm and will be hosted in the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. All theater locations can be found here by clicking on http://bit.ly/1AZ67rK

If you are unable to make one of the theater premiers, you can catch the television premier of American Odyssey on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 10p/9c, only on NBC.
