Military Connection: Concert For Valor: By Debbie Gregory

This Veterans Day, November 11th, at 7:00 P.M. EST, HBO and Starbucks are joining forces to host the Concert For Valor. This star-studded extravaganza at the National Mall in Washington D.C. is dedicated to Veterans from all eras and branches. The event honors the courage and sacrifices of America’s Veterans and military families by bringing together today’s biggest stars in music, film and television.

The Concert For Valor will feature performances by Bruce Springsteen, Carrie Underwood, Eminem, Dave Grohl, Metallica, Rhianna and the Zac Brown Band. They will be joined by special guests Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Jamie Foxx, John Oliver and many others.

Millions of Americans are expected to watch the free concert, either inperson or on television.HBO will air the event, allowing non-HBO subscribers the chance to view it.

Executive producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman previously worked together to produce the WWII-era HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Joining the executive production team on this project is Joel Gallen. The three have previously worked together on the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert and induction ceremony. Gallen will also serve as director for the Concert For Valor.

HBO has a long history of producing and airing programing that supports Veterans, raising awareness about their struggles, both while in uniform and after they came home.

Starbucks has made a commitment to hire 10,000 Veterans by 2018. Through the Shultz Family Foundation, Starbucks’ CEO Howard Shultz and his family have donated more than $30 million in support of transitioning Veterans.

Sponsors HBO and Starbucks enlisted the help of former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, to serve as advisors. Mr. Gates and Admiral Mullen will assist with Veteran outreach by contacting Veteran service organizations and programs to be the recipients of funds raised by the event.

Given the amount of organizational expertise and the star-power of the performers and guests, the Concert For Valor is sure to be a wonderful event. All Americans are invited to enjoy the concert, inperson or on television. By doing so, you honor the Veterans who have sacrificed so much in support of our freedom.
