Military Connection: Assisting Those Who Serve

By Debbie Gregory.

Purple Heart recipient Joshua Peter’s four-year military career ended the day he was hit by a bomb in Iraq. He and his unit were there to help rebuild a village and its people, oppressed under Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Joshua was classified as 100% disabled due to the injuries he sustained in Iraq. After returning home, Joshua married, and he and his wife are the proud parents of a young daughter. Transitioning home from military service proved to be difficult, as Joshua faced multiple surgeries, PTSD and unemployment.  In the fall of 2014, Joshua called America ICARE, distraught because the family car broke down, leaving his wife unable to take him to job interviews. He and his family also needed financial assistance to get their car registration renewed. Joshua was also concerned about being unable to financially provide for his family.

America ICARE held a special fundraiser for Joshua to keep his car running so he could get to future interviews. Joshua contacted  America ICARE shortly after receiving assistance and said:

“I finally got a job! I am now a Project Coordinator for a consulting company. Thank you so much for all your support and financial help in our time of struggling. America ICARE was so instrumental in helping me and my family get by, and there are no words to express my gratitude. Your encouragement was also so helpful on those days when I wasn’t sure we would make it. I’m so excited to finally turn a new leaf and get this new chapter in my life started. Thanks so much.”

Joshua reports that his job is excellent, and he is really excelling in his new role. He says things have really turned around for him and his family, and contributes that to his faith in God, and support from family and friends.  And even with a busy new job, he still finds the time to give back to those less fortunate. He and his family are excited to be leaving next week to go on a church mission trip to Rio De Janeiro. And as he said, “We just want to love on people.”
