Military Connection – Military Allowance Overview

Military Allowance Overview

Military Allowances are subsidies provided for specific needs. Military allowances can be provided for such items as food or housing. Monetary allowances are provided when the government does not provide for that specific need. These are an integral part of the military pay package.

As an example, if there is not a sufficient amount of government housing to house all military members and their families then a monetary military allowance may be provided to compensate for this need. Those who live in government housing do not receive full housing allowances. Those who do not live in government housing receive military allowances to assist them in obtaining commercial housing. Most allowances are not taxable, which is an additional benefit of military pay.
