What is Medical Personnel Pay?
Medical professionals are in high demand for civilian jobs and in demand by the military. There are types of special pay for medical professionals designed to retain them beyond their initial obligation and to narrow the gap between military and civilian salaries.
Health care professionals who are board certified in their specialties such as doctors and dentists receive special pay that ranges from a maximum of $6000 down to $2500 annually depending on their field and years and length of service.
Credible service is the time an officer spent in their internship and residency programs along with active duty time as a medical or dental officer. In order to be eligible to receive multiyear special pay, officers must have completed their initial residency and signed a written agreement to remain on active duty form two to four years. Bonuses vary depending on the specialty and years of service with as much as $50,000 yearly for a four year agreement to a minimum of $6000 a year for a two year agreement. Those medical and dental officers in critical specialties who are in pay grades of O-7 and below and have at minimum of eight years of credible service or no remaining active duty service commitment for medical education and training are eligible.
Those physicians who agree to one additional year of active duty are eligible for Additional Special Pay of $15,000 if they are not in residency or internship. Those dentists receive from $4000 to $15,000 based on the years of credible service of Additional Special Pay. Physicians and dentists on active duty for a minimum of one year may also receive $1200 to $12,000 of Valuable Special Pay depending on their years of credible service. Those physicians below the grade of O-7 and are not in an intern or residency program are also eligible for Incentive Special Pay for annual bonuses of $12,000 TO $42,000 per year if they agree to serve on active duty for a minimum of one additional year.
Certified Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA’s), Optometrists and Pharmacists are also eligible for Special Bonues. Certified Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA’s) can receive Incentive Special Pay if they are below the pay grade of O-7 and sign a written agreement to remain on active duty from one to four years. This Incentive Special Pay Bonus ranges from a minimum of $15,000 a year to a maximum of $40,000 a year depending on the additional commitment. The Optometry Retention Bonuses for optometrists who sign an agreement to remain on active duty an additional two years and are not in an educational or training obligation receive $6000 a year for this written pledge. Pharmacists too are eligible for Special Pay Bonuses if they remain on duty for an additional two years. The amount of the bonus ranges from $12,000 down to $3000 annually based on years of credible service.
