How long do I have to use my benefits under REAP (Chapter 1607)? You may use your benefits under REAP (Chapter 1607) as long as you remain within your reserve component. Benefits must be terminated if you leave the Reserves* or participate in a ROTC program under Title 10 Section 2107. A REAP (Chapter 1607) participant may not use more than 48 months of entitlement under any combination of VA Educational programs. For example, if you’ve already used 20 months of MGIB-SR (Chapter 1606), you will only receive 28 months of REAP (Chapter 1607). * An individual can have a break in Selected Reserve service of up to 90 days and still receive REAP (Chapter 1607) benefits as long as the individual remains in the Ready Reserve during and after the break. Note: There is no fixed delimiting period (ending date) for persons eligible under REAP (Chapter 1607) as there is for all of the other VA education programs as long as you remain in your Reserve component. There is one exception: If you are separated from the Ready Reserve for disability which was not the result of your own willful misconduct, you are entitled to chapter 1607 benefits for 10-years after the date of entitlement. The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (for Coast Guard cases) determine eligibility under REAP(Chapter 1607) and will administer these provisions.
