What is Foreign Language Proficiency Pay?

Those service members having proficiency in languages critical to the Department of Defense (DoD) such as Arabic, Pashtu, Persian-Afghan (Dari) and Chinese will receive the largest amounts of bonuses. Active duty service members may receive up to $1,000 a month and Reserve service members up to $6,000 beginning on June 1, 2006. Currently service members are compensated for proficiency in foreign languages at a pay rate of up to $200 monthly for one language and up to $300 monthly for two languages.
