As Veteran Unemployment Falls, Morale Reaches New Heights Veteran morale is inching upward as the overall veteran unemployment rate continues to fall. From April to May of this year, the unemployment rate for veterans fell from 9.1 percent to 7.8 percent, a comparably significant drop in recent months. For veterans who have been discharged since 2001, unemployment rates continue to trail those of the national average. Many young veterans who have served during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict have seen unemployment rates decrease from 13.1 percent in April to 10.6 percent in May. Although these numbers are drastically higher than they’ve been in the past, they are significantly lower than recent accounts. According to a recent report from the U.S. Labor Department, the national unemployment rate dropped .2 percent from April to May. This is partially due to 431,000 new jobs that were created in that time, although a large portion of those jobs were temporary census workers. In general, since last year, veterans’ and younger veterans’ unemployment rates have decreased, showing promise in months to come. Unemployment rates between men and women have generally remained about even, except for post-2001 veterans, whose numbers represent a wider difference. As of May, the unemployment rate for post-2001 male veterans was 9.8 percent while women suffered a 15.2 percent unemployment rate.
