As for the new VA GI Bill, you’re eligible if you entered service after September 11, 2001. Another difference is how tuition is paid out for veteran college and other opportunities for education for veterans. The Montgomery makes payments to students while the post 9/11 GI Bill makes payments directly to schools for veterans.
The amount of veteran education benefits you qualify for depends on length of service. The new VA GI Bill benefits include full-tuition, whereas the Montgomery is a flat $1,321 a month for veteran college or other educational opportunities.
