President Barack Obama’s 2011 budget will include a record-breaking $8.8 billion to support military families, First lady Michelle Obama said this week.

An estimated $1.9 billion will go to counseling and support services while another $1.3 billion will be spent for military child care. Ten new Defense Department schools are to be built costing another $439 million, and 103 schools are to undergo renovation or replacement altogether by 2015, according to an Associated Press report.

As part of the President’s plan, Military Spouses will also be seeing some relief with an estimated $84 million to be spent on career development, tuition assistance and a federal internship program. The Coast Guard will also be receiving $14 million for housing and money for youth programs for military kids.

Funding for the 2011 budget has increased by more than 3 percent. This is up from the current budget period that is at $8.5 billion.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, at a time where the United States fought in two foreign wars, Mrs. Obama found that more attention needed to be brought on the needs of service members and to the families that have endured multiple deployments.

Mrs. Obama has traveled around the country to address military families about their needs and concerns.  The First Lady does not take credit for the military family spending plan. Instead she states that this was “the result of military families speaking up and being heard,” the Associated Press reported.

Obama Administration officials say that the welfare of military families is extremely important for them, and for national security reasons. The blueprint of President Obama’s budget is to be sent to Congress on February 1, 2010.
