Compton: Military Family Appreciation Day will be rescheduled

Military Family Appreciation Day, scheduled for Oct. 21, had to be postponed because of the wind and fires throughout Southern California. Assemblywoman Audra Strickland will have a Military Family Appreciation Day as soon as a date and location can be established. I will keep you informed.

Our military families understand hardships and last-minute changes of plan and many of us were busy assisting friends and relatives in coping with the conditions on that day. For military families it was almost business as usual.

Families that did not request a certificate from the event should contact the assemblywoman’s office at 230-9167. Nonprofit organizations that are interested in participating should also call the same number.

Q. Last year there was a program in Moorpark to collect blankets for disabled veterans. Is there going to be a similar program this year and who do I contact?

A. The Moorpark American Legion Auxiliary Unit 502 is continuing with the Veterans Lap Robe/Blanket Program. Their goal is to deliver purchased fleece/blankets/throws that are 58 inches by 60 inches or homemade throws that are 45 inches by 58 inches to the Veterans Hospital between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Blankets can be donated at the One More Time Thrift Store, at 220 High St., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays or Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monetary donations can be mailed to Moorpark A.L.A. Unit 502, P.O. Box 131, Moorpark, CA 93020.

On behalf of the veterans of Ventura County I would like to salute Faye Beaver and her Auxiliary Unit 502 for this effort. For any questions about the program, contact Beaver at 529-1848.

Q. I am rated 100 percent disabled by the VA. My award letter did not provide for education benefits for my children. How do I get those benefits?

A. Your award letter states that you will have re-evaluation at a later date. To be eligible for education benefits for your children you need a permanent 100 percent rating.
