| Compton: Adult day healthcare can help disabled available for dad By George Compton Q. My father is 70 percent service-connected disabled, and I know the VA would cover long-term care. He does not need that level of service yet, so can you recommend an intermediate stage that the VA can help with? A. Consider adult day healthcare; Oxnard Family Circle has the VA contract to provide that level of care. The service includes transportation, therapy, lunch and, even more important, socialization. Oxnard Family Circle always has an active veterans group. Your father needs to be referred by his VA primary care physician, and the VA contract physicians in this county are familiar with adult day healthcare. Contact Oxnard Family Circle at 385-4180; the organization would be happy to give you and your father a tour of its facility. Q. I read that there was a women veteran’s day in Sacramento. Will there be another one closer? A. There will be a Women’s Health Day from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 24 at the Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center. The care center is at 351 E. Temple St., Los Angeles. The program topics will include nutrition and diet, fitness, stress management, sexual health, health screening, VA programs and services, and HIV rapid testing. Will my wife be automatically covered under the Survivor Benefit Plan? A. Because you did not have an eligible beneficiary when you retired, she will not be automatically enrolled. You need to make a decision on SBP coverage within one year of marriage.
