Chapter 1606, Montgomery GI Bill- Selected Reserve

The Selected Reserve under the Department of Defense consists of the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. The Coast Guard Reserve falls under the Department of Homeland Security. In exchange for a six year Selected Reserve obligation (longer for officers), you may be entitled to 36 months of Montgomery GI Bill- Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) education benefits. Other requirements include

the completion of Initial Active Duty for Training (including “A” school) and the completion of high school or GED. These military education benefits can be used for degree programs, certificate course, online courses, apprenticeship programs, and vocational flight training programs. The benefits can also be used for independent study. The 10-year entitlement period begins on the date the Service member meets this criteria.

Chapter 1606 of title 10, U.S. Code, commonly called MGIB – SR, is a military education benefit program that was enacted by Congress to attract high caliber men and women into the reserve branches of the Armed Forces. Under MGIB – SR , you may be entitled to receive up to six months of full-time military education benefits under the MGIB – SR. Benefits are paid for a maximum of 36 months based upon full-time enrollment.If you’re eligible for military education benefits under an additional VA education benefit program, you may be able to receive a maximum of 48 months of benefits under the combined programs.

Given the entrepreneurial spirit of those in the military, you can now receive military education benefits for training to help you run a small business. Approved courses offered by any small business development center administered by the federal Small Business Administration, or the National Veterans Business Development Corporation are covered under the MGIB – SR military education benefit program.

There is no costto the reservist for this military education benefit program.
