Tips for Traveling on a Budget

Vacations are the best! But the high costs often associated with traveling? Not so much…

At Armed Forces Vacation Club, we believe that you shouldn’t have to break the bank just to enjoy a great vacation! We’ve put together a list of our favorite wallet-friendly travel tips to help you make the most out of your vacation without busting your budget.

Be flexible with your airfare

There are tons of tips out there on how to make the most of your dollars when it comes to flights, but we like to use the simple motto ‘be flexible’! When your travel plans permit, try to be flexible with your departure day, departure time and airport (budget airlines frequently fly out of regional airports). All of this flexibility can translate to big savings!

When you can, drive

Do you know the saying “explore your own backyard”? Well, we love it – and so will your wallet! Take advantage of drive-to destinations to help cut down on transportation cost. Make the most out of your travel days by planning fun stops along the way to try new foods, see new sites and more.

Take advantage of the “free”!

In virtually every destination, there are opportunities to do, see and experience things for free. Spend a little time researching your destination before you travel to find the best of the “free” – including museums, outdoor music concerts, tours and more. Helpful Tip: the Visitors Bureau can be a great resource to explore!

Use your credit card points

Let your purchases work for you! Many credit cards offer reward points for purchasing everyday items – groceries, gas, etc. Before you travel, redeem your points for gift cards to use toward meals, tickets and more throughout your vacation.

Use a guidebook

Trust us. Guidebooks have been valued travel companions for decades – and for good reason! They can help you find the best restaurant in your price range, provide you with suggestions for self-guided walking tours and so much more.

When You Need Some R&R

Veterans Day affords us the opportunity to recognize those who have served and continue to serve in our nation’s armed forces. It is through their service and sacrifices that we live in freedom.

On Veterans Day, you can find quite a few veterans taking advantage of the many opportunities offered to them, from complimentary restaurant meals to discounted power tools. But one opportunity that all veterans should take advantage of is a discounted vacation.

Armed Forces Vacation Club and Veterans Holidays salute veterans and active military this week by offering $50 off select seven-night resort stays in celebration of Veterans Day. The discount is available today through November 15, 2016.

Popular destination spots available include Orlando, Las Vegas, Branson, and Lake Tahoe. Eligible members can also book travel to international vacation spots including Mexico, the Bahamas, New Zealand, and many European destinations.

Accommodations range in size from studios to three bedrooms, many of which include living rooms, full kitchens, and access to resort amenities.

Significant disruptions in their lives and other personal hardships have been the price that our nation’s military members and veterans have paid, so that the rest of us might enjoy the fruits of justice and liberty.

“We know that vacations can offer quality family bonding and rejuvenation time, which is so important for veterans, active military, retirees and their families.” said Tracey Moore, director of Marketing. “We created both of our clubs to offer affordable resort accommodations to make vacationing accessible to those who serve or have served our great nation.”

Membership for eligible military and veterans is complimentary, and provides access to discounted vacations year round. Armed Forces Vacation Club is open to active duty, guard, reserve and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as civilian employees of the Department of Defense. Veterans Holidays is open to all veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Membership provides access to seven-night vacation accommodations, starting from $349 per week, as well as other vacation options and travel planning resources.

To become a member and take advantage of the limited time offer, visit AFVClub.com  or VeteransHolidays.com. See website for full terms and conditions.

The Benefits of a Vacation

While many of us wouldn’t think twice about calling out from work if we had the flu, we often postpone taking much needed vacations.

Time off is medicine. Taking a vacation can cut the risk of heart attack in men by 30 percent and in women by 50 percent. Vacations alleviate stress, and time away from the source of stressors helps the body heal.

It is important to recognize that relaxing your mind and body, turning off the switch so that you forget about everything related to work is what a vacation is all about.

Scientific studies have shown that people who take regular vacations are better at their jobs. Vacation time is important for physical health, emotional health, interpersonal clarity and personal comfort, as well as increased efficiency and decreased irritability.

To take the stress out of paying for your vacation and avoid being forced into cramped accommodations with your spouse and kids, vacation lodgings, such as the ones available through Armed Forces Vacation Club (AFVC) are the way to go. Membership is free.

AFVC has lodging available virtually everywhere, including most states in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico…well, you get the idea.
