Veterans Can Be Trained For High Tech Jobs with New Federal Program

While the post-9/11 GI Bill provides funding for veterans to pursue traditional education programs, technological advancements have resulted in high tech jobs for military, high tech jobs for veterans, military high tech jobs and veteran high tech jobs.

These are great jobs that veterans interested in technology careers can and should fill. But unfortunately, most short-term tech training programs aren’t eligible for funding from the G.I. Bill,

A bill sponsored by CA Rep. Ro Khanna will now change that. The bill will launch a five-year pilot program so that short-term tech training courses will be able to get G.I. Bill funding much easier.

“These types of skills might be more beneficial in getting a good job than two years of college or even four years of college,” said Khanna.

The bill will fund programs like NPower, a nonprofit that offers courses in the basics of computer hardware, software, and advanced network administration..

The program, which costs between $6,000 and $10,000 per student, is currently funded by foundations and grants and doesn’t charge the veteran participants. But G.I. Bill funding would enable NPower to serve a greater number of veterans.

Khanna’s bill also allows veterans to collect their BAH housing stipends to offset their living expenses while they’re taking a training course.

High tech training will give veterans a leg up when it comes to securing good jobs. In fact, many veterans already have security clearances necessary for tech companies that contract with the government.

Khanna was the lead Democratic sponsor on the tech funding pilot program which was spearheaded by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield as part of a larger G.I. Bill expansion.

If the pilot program goes well, it could become permanent.

“This is reorienting the G.I. Bill for the 21st century,” Khanna said.

In a deeply divided Congress, it’s nice to see our elected officials reach across the aisle to benefit our veterans.

Military Tapping Civilians with High Tech Skills

High Tech Jobs for Civilians and High Tech Jobs For Military are in huge demand. Many civilians with high tech skills are taking a break from their private sector jobs to help America’s technological fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The Pentagon has ramped up its efforts to incorporate cyber technology into its daily military fight, including new ways to disrupt the enemy’s communications, recruiting, fundraising and propaganda.

Lt. Gen. Paul Nakasone, commander of U.S. Army Cyber Command, said that Guard and Reserve members need to step up their technical expertise in digital forensics, math crypto-analysis and writing computer code.

“I would like to know every single person that has been trained as a certified ethical hacker,” he said.

The Army Reserve is starting a pilot program cataloging soldiers’ talents. Among 190,000 Army reservists, Nakasone said there might be up to 15,000 with some type of cyber-related skills. But there are legal and privacy hurdles, and any database hinges on reservists voluntarily and accurately providing information on their capabilities.

“We are at the forefront of one of the most transformative times in our Army’s history, operating in a dynamic and challenging domain that is revolutionizing the way our Army fights and wins,” Nakasone said. “Our focus will be on defending our networks, data and weapons systems, delivering effects against our adversaries in and through cyberspace, and designing, building, deploying and integrating capabilities for the future fight, spanning cyberspace, electronic warfare and information operations.”

Nakasone said others in the civilian high-tech industry are interested in helping.

While the Army has to compete for talent with the private sector, which pays vastly better and doesn’t send you to be shot at, the military offers other incentives.

Besides the call to service, there’s the opportunity to do things that cyber professionals can’t do in civilian life. Well, they could, but if they did, they could be arrested for doing so.

The United States military is the largest user of technology worldwide. Additionally, there is a huge demand for military high tech jobs in both the private and government sectors. Military high tech jobs and Veteran High Tech Jobs pay some of the highest salaries.

USCYBERCOM Gets Wartime Assignment

The Defense Department’s United States Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM), the military arm of the government’s efforts in cyberspace, has received its first wartime assignment in the fight against the Islamic State. This increases the need for those trained in high tech jobs for military.

USCYBERCOM is an armed forces sub-unified command subordinate to United States Strategic Command. Founded in 2009, the command is located in Fort Meade, Maryland, and centralizes command of cyberspace operations, organizes existing cyber resources and synchronizes defense of U.S. military networks.

The Pentagon has just announced that the previous commander of the Cyber National Mission Force, Maj. Gen. George J. Franz III, is heading back to Cyber Command, where he will be director of operations. His return comes at a time when the command is stepping up efforts to hack the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq and Syria. His previous battlefield experience in Iraq and Afghanistan could come in handy in that regard.

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said, “I have given the Cyber Command in the counter-ISIL fight really its first wartime assignment.” ISIL is another name for the group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

Adm. Michael Rogers, the head of USCYBERCOM and director of the National Security Agency, said terrorists using cyberattacks to inflict damage on the U.S. and other nations was among his top concerns. The command has set three missions for itself that will lead to success in cyber operations: ensure DoD mission assurance, deter or defeat strategic threats to U.S. interests and infrastructure, and achieve Joint Force Commander objectives

By 2018, the Pentagon plans to have 133 cyber teams, 27 that are designed for combat to work with regional commands to support war-fighting operations. There will be 68 teams assigned to defend Defense Department networks and systems, 13 that would respond to major cyberattacks against the U.S., and 25 support teams.
