Sailors Salute Wounded Warriors at Holiday Event By Maile Y. Baca, Naval Base San Diego Public Affairs SAN DIEGO (NNS) — Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) and Navy Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) combined efforts to host over 300 wounded warriors, their families and the Wounded Warrior staff for a holiday celebration on Dec. 10 at NMCSD. Wounded warriors stationed at NMCSD and Navy Mobilization Processing Site San Diego were treated to a barbeque lunch and entertainment including the Navy Southwest Band “Seabreeze,” a Budweiser Clydesdale, Budweiser Ambassadors and a Charger Girls squad. “We realized that there really wasn’t a holiday event hosted by the Navy in San Diego, so with the help of our Chaplain Department and the NBSD religious community, we decided to develop the Wounded Warriors Holiday Salute,” stated NBSD’s Executive Officer Cmdr. Vince Garcia. Following the lunch, NBSD’s and NMCSD’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation helped provide holiday items for the Warriors. “We know that the holidays can be a hard time for those who are recovering from injuries sustained in the line of duty, so we wanted to provide items we knew were well liked by the wounded warriors to make this a happier holiday season,” said Ron Vogel, NBSD’s director of Fleet and Family Readiness. Three local elementary schools in San Diego helped to add to the holiday spirit by providing handmade holiday get well cards. Working with Navy Region Southwest’s school liaison officers, the teachers, staff and children from Kate Sessions Elementary, Farb Middle School and Miller Elementary School teamed to provide a card for each wounded warrior attending the event. “We know this made an impact and as a Top 50 workplace, we want to continue to support our Sailors and other services and their families in innovative and unique ways. This is something small we can do for those who have done so much for our country,” Capt. Rick Williamson, commanding officer, NBSD said. ———- MilitaryConnection.com, a portal of all things military, has become the “go to” site for resources, news and information that is of importance to the military audience.
