Medford Vascular Surgeon Treats Wounded Warriors In Germany

Mail Tribune By John Darling

Medford vascular surgeon Dr. David L. Street leaves Friday to volunteer for two weeks at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, treating wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Vascular surgery is a specialty in which diseases related to blood vessels are managed surgically. Street said he will work in first-stage recovery care, after wounded soldiers have received immediate care in battle zones.

“Typically surgery happens in the field,” he said. “Then the soldiers are transferred to Germany for recovery. I will most likely be helping treat complications resulting from the first surgeries “¦ and providing wound care for blast injuries and traumatic amputations.”

Street has practiced in the Rogue Valley for 22 years. Three years ago he answered an e-mail request from the Society of Vascular Surgery seeking volunteers. He was called recently to perform as a surgeon, and for teaching and supervising tasks.

“I don’t know what I’m walking into,” he said. “I look at it as a chance to help guys that help us out. It will be vascular and a lot of general surgery. I don’t know the need or opportunity, but will figure it out and be willing to go again if needed.”

He said the work likely would be arterial, in the sense of keeping blood flowing to injured organs.

Street is married and the father of three children. He is a graduate of University of California Davis Medical School and completed his vascular surgery research and clinical fellowship at the University of Rochester in New York.

Street said he expects to do a lot of care for “bad traumatic wounds.”

“I’m really excited about going,” he said. “I have a lot of skills. I hope I have nothing to do (no wounded patients), but I have the skill set to be useful for those problems.”

In a news release from his clinic, Street said, “There’s a time in your life when it’s just time to give back, and I’m there. We live in a great country that has been very good to me. It will be an honor to give back. I have the ultimate respect for what the military does for our country. It’s a selfless goal to guard our freedom.”
