NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) — USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Sailors attended a career seminar presented by members of the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Motivating Team Nov 3 at the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) in Newport News, Va.

During the presentation, Sailors from the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier were provided with information on career opportunities in the Navy’s special forces.

“We want to spread the word and make sure all potential candidates are truly committed and well informed,” said Capt. Adam Curtis, an NSW recruiter based out of San Diego. “You have to really want to do this line of work because when you are cold, wet, and hungry during training, you have to know what you’re there for and what you aim to achieve.”

Renowned for their diverse skill sets in special operations, Navy SEAL (Sea, Air, and Land) and SWCC (special warfare combatant craft crewman) personnel rank among the world’s most elite military forces.

As part of the event, presentation organizers provided interested personnel with an overview of the rigorous application process and training regimen required to enter the NSW community. Vinson Sailors also gained a wealth of information about typical career paths for SEAL and SWCC personnel.

According to SEAL motivator and former Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Mark Courrier, Navy personnel interested in applying for NSW programs must fill out an application worksheet available on www.seal.navy.mil or www.swcc.navy.mil and pass a specially designed physical readiness test.

Courrier also said both Navy SEALs and SWCCs can potentially earn bonuses for special skill sets but cautioned that serious applicants should look beyond the monetary rewards and focus on the sacrifices required to successfully pass the arduous training process.

“If you’re just in it for the money, you’re not going to make it through because our initial training is a test of your mental and physical strength,” said Courrier.

After the presentation, Sailors on hand said they left with a better understanding of what it takes to be a part of the NSW community.

“I’ve wanted to apply for the SEALs since I was a little kid,” said Aviation Support Equipment Technician 3rd Class Robert Matestic. “It’s not only a tight knit community but a very exciting lifestyle. It’s something I’m interested in trying during my Navy career.”

USS Carl Vinson is currently undergoing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.

During RCOH Carl Vinson’s infrastructure will be upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.
