Air Force and ANG Chaplains Attend the Chaplain Corps Summit and Reflect on Milestones

The Chaplain Corps Summit, held in December, 2009 in Orlando, Florida, was attended by more than 100 chaplains and chaplain assistants from the United States Air Force. The festivities were in honor of the Air Force Chaplain Corps’ 60th anniversary, as well as the 100th anniversary of the chaplain assistant career field.

Throughout the event, Air Force chaplains reflected on the history of the Chaplain Corps. “We reminisced over years of service and fellowship in our past and looked ahead to the role of the chaplain corps in meeting current and future mission needs,” Chaplain Maj. Gen. Cecil R. Richardson said. Richardson serves as the chief of chaplains and believes “Air Force chaplains and chaplain assistants continue to support our Airmen in today’s fight as we walk where they walk and go where they go.”

The event recounted important milestones in the Chaplain Corps’ storied history and considered detailed milestones for the future. In reflection, Richardson noted that “in 2008, the Air Force Chaplain Corps performed more than 147,000 counselings, provided more than 50,000 worship observances and conducted more than 28,000 religious rites and observances for Airmen and their families.”

The summit closed with a Heritage banquet. For many, it was a great celebration of the successes of the Chaplain Corps and the Air Force alike. Many of the attendees recognized the relationships built over many years serving in the Chaplain family.

“Our mandate is clear, our hearts are united, our mission is exciting and our passion for ministry to the men and women of the United States Air Force has never been stronger,” Richardson explained. The Chaplain Corps looks forward to many more successful years serving the Air Force.
