| The Top U.S. Commander for the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars Begins Treatment for Prostate Cancer At 56 years old, General David Petraeus was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer in February of 2009. The top U.S. commander for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars kept the matter disclosed from press and the public, deeming it a “personal matter” that did not interfere with his work, although President Barack Obama and top members of the administration were notified. He received treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Pentagon has stated that his treatment is successful so far. He commanded a region located through the Middle East and across Central Asia and made at least one trip overseas during his treatment. Petraeus is now the head of U.S. Central Command. He is known to be integrally involved in the National Security Council debate regarding new Afghan strategy. He even flew to Germany at the end of September, 2009, to meet with the commander in Afghanistan. Gen. Stanley McChrystal replaced Petraeus as commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
