| Civilians Receive Medals for Anti-Explosive Support in Iraq and Afghanistan From Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technical Division Technical Support Detachment INDIAN HEAD, Md. (NNS) — Twenty-five civilians from Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NAVEODTECHDIV) received the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), June 25, for their direct support for counter-improvised explosive device efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), presented medals to recipients at the command’s Indian Head, Md., field activity. “It’s a thrill to be here, honoring those in the fight or supporting the fight,” said McCoy. “It’s great to be able to recognize everybody for the outstanding work they’ve been doing.” The GWOT medal recognizes contributions and accomplishments of the civilian DoD workforce in direct support of the armed forces whose members are engaged in operations to combat terrorism. The medal is a “theatre” award, and is authorized for civilian employees who on, or after Sept. 11, 2001, participate abroad in direct support of a U.S. military GWOT operation in a designated geographic location approved for award of the GWOT Expeditionary medal. Charles Hallock, an electronics engineer recognized for three deployments to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2010, noted his appreciation for the on-going need to augment our military forces with a wide, diverse skill set in the fight against IEDs. “It’s pleasing to be recognized in such a positive nature for serving in a warzone,” said Hallock. NAVEODTECHDIV is a field activity of NAVSEA under the Naval Surface Warfare Center focused on exploiting technology and intelligence and providing the forces needed to develop and deliver EOD information, tools, equipment and their lifecycle support to meet the needs of joint service EOD operating forces and combatant commanders.
