Educational Scholarship Honors Memory of Sergeant John Fry

The Department of Veterans Affairs has created a scholarship for children of soldiers that have died while serving the military since Sept. 11, 2001. It is an award that commemorates the life of Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry, who lost his life serving the U.S. while disarming a bomb, and who was survived by his three children.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric K. Shinseki, stated that the scholarship “represents this nation’s solemn commitment to care for the children whose mothers and fathers paid the ultimate price for our country.” The award, which is retroactive to August 1, 2009, will begin being paid on August 1, 2010. The VA will begin taking applications for the Fry scholarship on May 1, 2010 and estimates about 1,500 surviving children will be able to receive benefits in 2010.

For guidelines and qualifications of who is eligible to receive the Fry scholarship and for general information on how to apply, visit the VA GI Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov or this toll free number: 1-888-442-4551.
