Something About Military Nurses

DESCRIPTION: Provide all aspects of traditional nursing care and practice in both peace and war-time settings through various branches of the military service (e.g., army, navy, air force). Classifications include active duty, guard and reserves and civilian employment

PRACTICE ROLES: Staff and supervision in all medical specialties. General and advanced practice opportunities are available nationwide and worldwide.

CHARACTERISTICS: Often given broader range of responsibility and offered broader scope of practice than in civilian practice settings, RN/BSN enters active duty military nursing as an officer. Further education is encouraged. Military Nurses can hit the floor running. Many demonstrate outstanding leadership skills.

DRAWBACKS: Possibility of being called for global war-time duty and deployments, time commitment involved with active duty, guard and reserves.

DESIREABLE SKILLS: Critical care, OR and trauma experience is highly desirable but not necessary. Experience in specialties across the board.

EDUCATION: RN with BSN required for active duty. BSN not required for guard and reserves or civilian employment. Military nurses in general obtain more degrees and higher levels of education. Many are also licensed or licensed-eligible for numerous states.

EMPLOYERS: US Government, state, and local governments as well as contract agencies for civilian employment. Military nurses also transition well to private hospitals.
