National Intrepid Center of Excellence to Open in June

A center that will specialize in the treatment of service members with traumatic brain injury and psychological health conditions is set to open in June at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, according to a feature on the Navy Times.

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence is to be funded by private donations. It is a project of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a non-profit organization that supports service members and their families. It was started by the Fisher family, whose Fisher Houses are known in providing low or no-cost lodging for families of wounded or injured service members who need to be with their loved ones while they are undergoing medical treatment or rehabilitation.

The effort has so far raised $65 million from donations that range from a few dollars to a gift of $3 million from TV personality Bob Barker. There were also donations from corporations as well as non-government organizations. These donations went into the building of the center as well as towards the purchase of equipment. The Defense Department will take care of operating the center.

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence is expected to provide service members with psychological health conditions and traumatic brain injuries with the latest treatments. It is also expected to conduct research and to test new treatments, as well as to train and educate patients, providers and their families.

In a previous post we already mentioned how Medal of Honor recipients have come together for a campaign that aims to encourage service members to seek help for stress disorders; the center will hopefully serve as a way for service members to get the help that they need.
