Army Nurses Serving In Afganistan

ARMY NURSES Maj. Michael Sadler, RN, and Capt. Brad West, RN, CRNA, recently returned home from six months with the Army’s 250th Forward Surgical Team (FST) in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Sadler was the chief nurse, and West the chief nurse anesthetist. The 250th was one of only two FSTs in Afghanistan treating US forces as well as allied Afghan soldiers and injured Al Quada and Taliban fighters. The second team is the 274th FST at Bagram.

The 250th went into Afghanistan in December after first spending time in another Gulf Coast country. It is part of the 62nd Medical Brigade at Ft. Lewis, WA. Members of the team received the Combat Medical Badge for their performance while under enemy fire.

Interviewed by e-mail while they were in Afghanistan, the nurses revealed how working in the M*A*S*H units of the new millennium was distinctly different from, yet eerily the same as, the experiences of nurses who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
