Thousands of Veteran Students Are Feeling the Pressure of VA Department Benefits Delays

The Veterans Affairs department continues to have delays in processing benefit claims. The department is contacting schools and colleges around the nation to explain that a 6-8 week delay is in effect. Thousands of students are feeling the effects of these delays in their payments, mostly in the weight of their wallets.

For students currently in their second or third year of school, these delays are posing as extreme financial challenges that may require them to leave school. Others are finding it difficult to begin their schooling without the benefits they were expecting. Even more students are finding they need to pick up extra jobs to cover their expenses while waiting on their claims to process.

Herald “Skip” Kempnich is in charge of the University of Iowa student veterans’ financial aid requests and said that he made sure to put his students’ claims through as early as possible, not waiting to find out their eligibility for the Yellow Ribbon program.

“I made sure that [my students] at least get the minimum amount. Then if I needed, I upgrade them to a Yellow Ribbon if they’re eligible,” Kempnich said. Other parts of the administration at UI have made efforts to ease the waiting period for these students as well. This year, vet students will not be penalized for overdue tuition bills while generally, students are unable to charge university necessities to their ID cards if their bill is overdue.
