| Considering the GI Bill: Is Change Needed? Upon consideration of Senator McCain’s call for a review of the current GI Bill and, consequently, an expansion of it, there are a few points to think about. For starters, the proposed changes are contrary to every other GI Bill. Also, the changes force service members who are eligible to decided which is more important, their service or their education. Furthermore, McCain’s changes fail to remedy the inequality of education benefits between current and previous veterans. Previous GI Bills, including the Montgomery GI Bill that was enacted in 1985, were created to provide incentives for veterans in order to maintain an all-volunteer military. The changes seem to act more like bribes than like benefits. This has many officials concerned. Their concern lies in the fact that while the changes may attract many qualified recruits, many that enter the military in hope of utilizing those educational benefits will leave as soon as they are able to.
