Increased GI Bill Benefits May Hurt Military Numbers

Increased GI Bill Benefits May Hurt Military Numbers

As the Post-9/11 GI Bill encourages higher enlistment rates in the U.S. military, officials share concern that military retention may decrease dramatically in the coming years due to the enticing new benefits package.

The new bill increased educational funding to include partial to full tuition and housing expenses as well as other fees associated with attending college. The bill covers full tuition for any public school including community colleges and state-funded schools. Just since May 1, more than 25,000 veterans filed for benefits under the new GI Bill. Shortly after the VA put up the registration site, it crashed due to an overflow of visitors.

In an effort to maintain retention rates, the military is offering incentives to soldiers choosing to extend their service by another 4-year term. One of those incentives includes the ability to transfer education benefits to a spouse or dependents. The military is hoping these efforts result in positive retention rates in the coming months and years.
