Senate Pushes GI Bill, War Funding Forward

While many officials warned about the possibility of a Presidential veto, a bill set to increase GI Bill education benefits by $63 billion as well as increasing war funding by $162 billion passed Congress and will be signed by the President.

Enacting the bill will halter a financial crisis the Pentagon has been carrying that may have ended in cancellation or delayed military and civilian payroll, among other threats. The bill will begin a new era in military benefits for veteran education by offering to cover tuition and other college fees completely. Many veterans who otherwise would not be able to attend college classes will now be able to attend many schools of their choice.

The bill didn’t come easy, though. Months of debate and many revisions went in to the production of the final bill, which is technically titled the Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act, a name that Jimm Webb, a Democratic senator from Virginia, gave the bill. Webb is one of the greatest supporters of the bill and it was he that originally introduced it to the Senate.
