Questions, Answers on New Post-9/11 GI Bill

With so much confusion about the New Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Veterans Affairs Department has made efforts to clear up questions as much as possible. The New GI Bill is one of the largest undertakings the VA has accomplished since its installation in 1944. The complexity of the bill, general administrative issues and misunderstandings about its coverage has caused many of the delays in the VA’s implementation of the bill.

Already, a technical corrections bill is being completed to clear up some oversights and mix-ups. The bill incorporates a number of different requirements and qualifications. Some of the changes in requirements and specifications in qualifications may cause some veterans’ benefit packages to be less than they expected. The VA continues to strive to make education as affordable as possible to all veterans who wish to pursue it.

According to Bob Norton, Military Officers Association of America member, the changes in the bill, although significant and dramatic, should not detract from the fact that it still offers an incredibly affordable path for veterans to attend college. Some groups of people may suffer more than others, depending on how the revised bill turns out, including spouses and children expecting to utilize GI Bill benefits, veterans currently using the Montgomery GI Bill who haven’t made the $1,200 contribution, veterans who have used the full 36 months of their entitlement, and veterans currently enrolled in a state college or university or veterans who will be attending one.
