Children of Fallen Troops Now Qualified to Apply for GI Bill Scholarships

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

As Virginia Congressman Glenn Nye stated, “We have a solemn duty to care for the children of the brave men and women who make the ultimate sacrifice for our country.” Nye was one vote of many that pushed the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship through Congress. The scholarship allows children of troops that have died while on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 to apply for GI Bill benefits.

As of Saturday, May 1st, children of these fallen soldiers can begin applying for the scholarship, which grants full tuition coverage. Previously, children of fallen soldiers were able to receive tuition coverage and fees up to the highest in-state tuition for 36 months, as well as coverage of other miscellaneous college costs. Those survivors have up to 15 years to use their benefits, beginning on their 18th birthdays.

An estimated 1,500 children will be eligible for the scholarship, according to information from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Nye states that he “had the honor of working alongside our troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and making sure their families will be taken care of is one of the most important things we can do for them.”
