6th Annual SVA Conference to be Held in Scottsdale, AZ
By Debbie Gregory.
The Student Veterans of America (SVA) has announced the dates and location of the 2014 national conference. The dates of the 6th annual conference are January 2-5, 2014, and will be held at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Each year, since 2009, the SVA has held an annual conference to inform and educate chapter representatives from all over the country about SVA programs. They also provide the SVA with the opportunity to hold roundtable and Q&A discussions with student Vets to receive feedback about policies and laws that pertain to them and their education. The SVA provides activities, seminars and workshops for those who attend. The conferences are also a great way for Veteran students to meet and network with each other.
Past conferences have been held in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Las Vegas and Orlando. Each conference has also had themes that their sessions focused on. Past themes have included “Combating Veterans Unemployment” and “National Network–– Local Impact.”
The theme of this year’s conference is “Pioneering Social Change,” and will feature sessions such as “Combat to Campus to Career.” This particular seminar will be conducted by Veterans who now work for prominent companies and organizations. These Vets will discuss their experiences with transitioning from the military to college, and then to their civilian careers. Other sessions will focus on selected chapters sharing innovative ideas for the student Veteran community, including retaining members through motivational success stories, and how local chapters can collaborate with local communities, creating a national network for the SVA.
The 2014 conference has a $50 registration fee for student Veterans and a $100 registration fee for non-student Veterans. Tickets are half price if ordered online at studenveterans.org before October 23, 2013. Hotel accommodations are available for the event by calling the Scottsdale Plaza Resort at 1-800-832-2025 .
