2008 U.S. Military Retired Handbook
(on Military Connection)
FREE Military Handbooks for Active and Retired U.S. Military Personnel
This unique handbook will guide you step by step through the entire process. You will gain a clear understanding of all your rights and privileges, so that you may take full advantage of all the benefits. After all, you’ve earned them, and a grateful nation wants you to experience and enjoy them.
As many as 61,000 military widows whose husbands died of causes relating to their military service lose out on thousands of dollars a year in survivor benefits because of a law that dates from the 1970’s. Widows and retirees have spent decades trying to persuade Congress to change the law, which hits hardest at the widows of lower-ranking service members and is referred to by many critics as the “widow’s tax.’’
A Million Thanks is a year-round campaign to show our U.S. Military Men and Women, past and present, our appreciation for their sacrifices, dedication, and service to our country through our letters, emails, cards, prayers, and thoughts.
With so much going on before a military deployment—the preparation, the training, the loving goodbyes—it is easy to see how seemingly and separately "small" details that go with deployment may slip through the cracks. Whether administrative, legal or financial, there are a number of tasks families need to complete before the deployment date.

Our oldest, Ford (5) was born the day before Thanksgiving. A few days later, my husband, Dustin, left on an aircraft carrier. It was our first taste of the Navy's dirty little secret: Prior to a six-month deployment, they will spend six months preparing for the event by going on a series of home-again/gone-again training missions, during which time they are home very little.
Part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguished itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering.
