September is National Suicide Awareness Month. It is a national tragedy when more soldiers are dying from suicide than in combat. By bringing the issue of suicide to the nation’s attention, hopefully we can de-stigmatize PTSD, depression, and the other mental health issues that are associated with suicide. We are glad the Defense Department and the VA are being pro-active and trying to recognize this issue and provide resources. If you have thoughts of suicide or are depressed, please be courageous and ask for help. If you suspect your buddy or a loved one needs help, this is the time to intervene because you could be saving a life. For a list of available resources, click here.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Deadline October 21st

Stop Loss

You've Earned It, DON'T LOSE IT!

We know it’s only September, but October will be here sooner than you know. Although the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012, this may be the final deadline. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. Type "O" Kidney Needed

Give Organ and Tissue

Help a Hero

In April, 2008, we brought you the story of Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Jones, who became the “ultimate wingman” when he donated a kidney to Air Force Tech. Sgt. Adam Johnson, a fellow controller who suffered from a rare autoimmune disease. In March of 2011, we told you about Sergeant Jacob Chadwick, who was also in need of a kidney. His call for help was answered by the brave family of the late Lt. Patrick Wayland. Now there is a highly decorated soldier, with decades of service to America, who is in need of a kidney. The soldier, who wishes to remain anonymous at this time, has “O” type blood, which narrows his chances through the national registry. If you are interested in becoming a donor, please contact SoldierDonorAK4SA@gmail.com. For Facebook updates, click here.
