October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More women than ever are surviving breast cancer survivors due to a combination of early detection and leading edge medicine. This is a disease that can be cured in the early stages. A healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your chances of getting this disease. I urge all women to stay current on your health screenings and get a mammogram or ultrasound. If a physician finds something suspicious and tells you to return in 6 months or a year, obtain a second opinion. As women, we tend to put the needs of others before our own, but in order to take care of our sons and daughters, husbands and signifcant others, we must first take care of ourselves.

We want to share some good news about Valerie Brown, our featured Veteran in the last newsletter, who has been seeking employment. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! We congratulate Valerie on her new career, and we’re happy that we were able to connect her with her new employer. We wish Valerie continued success. Military Connection provides many services, including employment. We are a Top 100 Employment Web Site. I invite both Job Seekers and Employers to register here. When the next tour is back home, it’s on MilitaryConnection.com, the Go To Site.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Deadline October 21st

Stop Loss

You've Earned It, DON'T LOSE IT! - $$$$

October is almost here. Although the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012, this may be the final deadline. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. Habitats for Heroes

Habitat and Calvet

Calvet & Habitat for Humanity

In an unprecedented collaboration, the California Department of Veteran Affairs (CalVet) has set aside more than $21 million for Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley to build homes for California veterans and their families living in Santa Clarita/Sylmar, CA. This collaboration will result in the construction of the country’s first service-enriched Habitat for Heroes veteran village for low-income veterans. Veterans will provide sweat equity to reduce the costs and help build these green, energy-efficient affordable homes. MilitaryConnection.Com nurtured the introductions; and the Governor's Interagency Council on Veterans brought it to fruition. The ribbon cutting ceremony is on October 1st at 1:00 pm, adjacent to 21508 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita, CA.
