The milestone ten year 9/11 Memorials have concluded, and we Americans can be proud of how our country came together to remember those who perished in the attacks. It was heartwarming to see all of the tributes to our active duty military and Veterans, first responders and medical personnel. I personally was amazed at the turnout for our local 9/11 Freedom Walk at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. We were honored to have Rear Admiral Robert Girrier of the USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group address the crowd, less than 24 hours after returning home from a 7 month deployment in Iraq. Admiral Girrier was followed by New York City firefighter Lt. John McCole, who shared his emotional memories working the World Trade Center rescue mission. But probably the most moving speaker to address the crowd was Lt. Colonel Tim Karcher, an American Hero and Wounded Warrior. Lt. Colonel Karcher was wounded twice in Iraq, the second time resulting in the loss of both his legs. Despite his loss, LTC Karcher is undeterred in his passion to serve his country, and his devotion to his family. “Let us never forget the tragedy, but let us also rekindle our patriotism and resilience that we felt that dark day 10 years ago.” He also went on to say, “I can tell you that I am married to a heroine and our three daughters are incredibly courageous and strong”. LTC Karcher reminds us that the families of our military and first responders also serve, and their support is invaluable. We all owe them our gratitude.

The PSA encourages Veterans in crisis to call the crisis hotline number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to reach a trained VA mental health professional, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  An online Veterans Chat program, which provides the ability to communicate anonymously online in real-time with a trained VA mental health professional, can be accessed through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s web page.
