A lot of attention has been focused on Post-Traumatic Stress because PTSD has become so pervasive in our society. With October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it is important to recognize that there are links between trauma, PTSD, and domestic violence for both men and women. In recent studies of our nation’s veterans, findings reveal that depression has played a role in aggression among people with PTSD. Those with both depression and PTSD may experience feelings of anger and frustration, and may have difficulty controlling their emotions. Many treatments incorporate anger management skills and learning effective ways of coping with stress, such as deep breathing, yoga, affirmations and exercise. If you are the victim of domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or 800-787-3224 (TTY). Help is available 24/7.

Warm regards,

Deadline Oct 21st

Stop Loss

You've Earned It, DON'T LOSE IT! - $$$$

October is almost here. Although the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012, this may be the final deadline. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. Helping Wounded Warriors
Obtain Their Benefits!

Social Security Administration

Dedicated Social Security Website

For military service members who return home with injuries, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has launched a dedicated website to address their needs. Social Security’s Wounded Warriors website answers many commonly asked questions, and shares other useful information about disability benefits, including expedited processing of disability claims. Benefits available through Social Security are different from Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, and require a separate application. The expedited process is for service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs. Active duty military who continue to receive pay while in a hospital or on medical leave should consider applying for disability benefits if they are unable to work due to a disabling condition. Active duty status and receipt of military pay does not prevent payment of Social Security disability benefits. For more information, click here.
