October is National Depression Awareness Month. Anonymous depression screenings are available online, through the Department of Veterans Affairs, and through behavioral health agencies and resources in local communities. Depression, even the most severe case, is a highly treatable disorder. As with any illness, the earlier the treatment begins, the more effective it is and the greater the likelihood the recurrence of depression can be prevented. If you or someone you know suffers from depression, help is available.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We hope you will click on the link below to find out more about the Love/Avon Army of Women to advance breast cancer research.

Best regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Veterans in Crisis - Suicide is Preventable!

As more and more men and women in uniform return from Iraq and Afghanistan, there is an increasing need for mental health care. The VA is reaching out to Veterans in crisis and their families to raise awareness about suicide prevention resources, such as the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The PSA encourages Veterans in crisis to call the crisis hotline number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to reach a trained VA mental health professional, 24/7.  An online Veterans Chat program, which provides the ability to communicate anonymously online in real-time with a trained VA mental health professional, can be accessed through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s web page. Suicide is 100% preventable, and it is everyone’s responsibility

Blueprint for Change

National Guard Association of the United States

Sign the National Guard Petition Online

"We the People", is a White House petition that allows citizens to create and sign petitions asking the Obama Administration to take action on a range of issues.  The National Guard Association of the United States has created a petition asking President Obama to implement his “Blueprint for Change” and give the National Guard a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  The last ten years of war, as well as disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, have demonstrated that the National Guard is an indispensable member of our national defense and disaster response forces. Like other military forces, the Guard has been challenged by long-term & multiple deployments to front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet they are not currently represented in the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). Becoming a permanent member of the JCS will further enhance the ability of the National Guard to perform both its state and federal missions. The petition requires 5,000 signatures by October 23, 2011 for White House review and response. You can view and sign the petition here.
