June is known for weddings, dads and grads. Let us all remember that there are dedicated men and women who will not be with their loved ones to celebrate these milestones because they are in service to our country. The sacrifices they make don’t end there. June 27th has been designated as National PTSD Awareness Day. The day is intended to increase awareness about PTSD and help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The legislated date is the birthday of Staff Sgt. Joe Biel, who suffered from PTSD after serving two tours in Iraq. Unfortunately, Staff Sgt. Biel took his own life. The DoD reports that the VA has treated more than 217,000 veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq for PTSD, with many cases of PTSD unreported. To learn more about post-traumatic stress, visit the VA’s National Center for PTSD at http://www.ptsd.va.gov.

On a personal note, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us in the Mission: Small Business qualifying round. We far surpassed the number of votes required, and look forward to moving on in the competition.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Deadline Extended to October 21st

Stop Loss

You’ve Earned It - Claim it or Lose it

The deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit.
