On July 10th I had the opportunity to join 1,500 veterans and their spouses at the “Hiring our Heroes” job fair in Los Angeles. The event, held at Sony Pictures Studios, welcomed honored guests Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Prince William expressed his deep and sincere admiration for service members and their spouses. Also addressing the crowd was proud Military Spouse Patty Shinseki, the wife of Secretary of the VA Eric Shinseki. Patty serves on the “Joining Forces” initiative introduced by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. Although military training provides our Veterans with technical skills, leadership experience, and a commitment to teamwork, many still struggle to find jobs. The “Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet” initiative helps match them with employers who value their skills. The event is one of 100 to be held by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce throughout the nation this year, and one of nine “Honor a Hero, Hire a Vet” job fairs being held in California this year. We salute ServiceNation: Mission Serve, the ESGR, SHRM, and the United Way of Los Angeles for their participation, and their unwavering support of our nation’s heroes.

Saluting a Hero

Medal of Honor Recipient

Medal of Honor Recipient

President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor today to Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry, an Army Ranger who lost his right hand while throwing away a live grenade that would have killed him and two of his Ranger brothers. President Obama said that Petry exhibited "a singular act of gallantry" in Afghanistan on May 26, 2008. "What leads a person to risk everything so that others may live?" Obama asked while describing the incident in which Petry "lunged forward" to grab the grenade "just as it exploded." Calling the award "such a tremendous honor," Petry thanked his family, the medical team who has worked on him, his fellow Rangers and the fallen. He also thanked his comrades and said, "to be singled out is very humbling." Petry urged Americans to support the troops who "sacrifice every day and deserve your support," and simply shake the hands of those they encounter. He stated that the best reward is "just a simple thank you"

Providing for California's Veterans

Cal Vet

CALVET joins Forces with CA DMV

A new program initiated by the CA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) will help connect veterans in California with the services and benefits they have earned through their prior or current service in the U.S. Military. When a Californian applies for a new driver’s license or renewal, or if they apply for an identification card, they will be able to check a box that will permit the DMV to share the applicants contact information with CalVet. The veterans will then be sent information that gives a brief outline of services and benefits including education benefits, employment assistance, disability and compensation payments, health care benefits and much more.  CalVet Services also has online tools like its Reintegration form, which links returning veterans with service providers and resources.  Veterans wishing to contact CalVet’s reintegration program directly can do so by clicking here.

Recognizing Veterans

Peter J. Gravett

Peter J. Gravett, Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, spoke to attendees at the “Hire Our Heroes” event in Los Angeles, attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Major General Gravett acknowledged the qualities that Veterans bring to the employment arena. He said, “The veterans today are dedicated hard working men and women who bring with them skills that make them outstanding employees and events like this one today show that employers recognize that fact”. We second that sentiment.

Great Read

Bright Light-One Man's Story

Bright Light-One Man's Story

Bright Light is the true story of the Top Secret war in Vietnam. Highly trained and heavily armed insurgents were infiltrated behind enemy lines into Laos and North Vietnam during the peak of the Vietnam War. The Warriors of SOG carried no identification, wore no dog tags and were basically men without a country as they served as the tip of the spear for US military operations along the border regions of Laos and Cambodia. Read of the men, the missions and the sometimes hilarious situations which occurred in the base camp or Forward Operational Base. A free excerpt of the first chapter can be read here. The book can be ordered at www.brightlight1968.com or from online booksellers.

Inspiring Read

Support TAPS

Support TAPS
Be inspired by an amazing story and support the families of our fallen Military.  An original children's book, "Klinger: A Story of Honor and Hope," tells the story of a young horse dreaming of fame as a racehorse. But his life is disrupted when he must leave his parents and start a new life. Faced with difficulty and disappointment, Klinger’s dream of significance seems unattainable. He finds fulfillment in honoring fallen heroes and bringing comfort to their families. Based on a real horse that serves in the Caisson Platoon in Arlington National Cemetery, this work of fiction was written by Betsy Beard, TAPS magazine editor and surviving mom of SPC Bradley Beard in honor of all of America's beloved fallen heroes. Copies are available through and sales support the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), an organization providing  peer-based emotional support to the families of our fallen military.
