Military Connection has the honor and pleasure to work with exceptional non-profit organizations that serve military and veterans. In fact, this is the best part of what we do. This weekend, I am joining forces with Bonnie Carroll of TAPS.org to welcome 40 widows of fallen soldiers for an over-the-top Southern California weekend. Among the highlights are a visit with Ben Stein, beauty makeovers and photo shoot, a movie premier at CAA, and a visit with our friend Gary Sinise on the set of CSI:NY. Wrapping up the weekend, Lisa Cypers Kamen of Harvesting Happiness 4 Heroes and yours truly will be co-hosting a BBQ on the beach in Malibu, following surfing lessons for the women.

Less than 1% serve, but all of us can make a difference. You can learn more about TAPS and Harvesting Happiness in this edition of the newsletter.

Warm regards,

Debbie Gregory, CEO

Deadline October 21st

Stop Loss

You've Earned It, DON'T LOSE IT!

We know it’s only August, but October will be here sooner than you know. Although the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012, this may be the final deadline. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. Transition to Success

Transition GPS

Transition GPS

For the first time in 20 years, the military’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP) will be getting a major overhaul. Transition GPS will integrate career and education counseling and training across the military life cycle, as well as expanding the three day program to five days. Service members will complete individual pre-separation counseling and develop a personalized Individual Transition Plan, providing a roadmap for a successful transition. Additionally, there is also an optional two day training program to equip them with the tools needed to successfully pursue their post-military goals such as attending college, earning a professional license, or starting a small business. Good Read!

Multitude of Hope

Rediscovering the American Dream

Pundits are saying the American Dream is over. Peter Weddle disagrees. His new book is A Multitude of Hope: A Novel About Rediscovering the American Dream. The story engulfs you in a no-holds-barred conflict between a self-styled monarchy of greed-is-good investors and a virtual colony of revolutionaries using the Web to even the score. Part edge-of-your-seat thriller, part exploration of modern American culture and part primer on how to find a job and hang onto it in today’s economy, this is one novel you won’t want to miss.
