We are proud to see the progress being made to support our Veterans with the enactment of both the VOW To Hire Heroes Act and the Post 9/11 GI Bill. The VOW To Hire Heroes Act provides tax credits of up to $9,600 per hire to employers that hire Veterans. Our Veterans can use their Post 9/11 GI bill benefits to educate themselves and qualify for better jobs. The Post 9/11 GI Bill pays tuition directly to qualifying colleges, universities, trade schools and certificate programs. Additionally, Veterans receive tax free living expenses while taking classes (including distance education classes) and $1,000 per year for books and supplies. More than 700,000 Veterans have already signed up for Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to further their education and skills. Many more will follow as they transition out of the military. If you want to learn more about these tax credits and education benefits, please email us at [email protected].

Give an Hour

Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential
One of our own...

TIME Magazine announced that our friend, Barbara Van Dahlen, founder and president of Give an Hour, has made their 2012 list of the 100 Most Influential People In The World. (The World!) The TIME 100 recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world's most influential individuals. Barbara has worked tirelessly for the past seven years to build a strong, national network of mental health professionals who provide free services to U.S. troops, veterans, their loved ones and their communities. Since 2005, Barbara's work has brought together over 6,100 providers, who have donated nearly $5 million worth of services. If that weren’t enough, Give an Hour was also chosen by The White House as a Joining Forces Community Challenge winner! Barbara’s dedication and collaborative spirit is contagious. Barbara's work with Give an Hour is a shining example of what can be achieved when citizens step forward to address a need.

Officials extend deadline to apply for 'Stop Loss' pay

Officials extend deadline

Officials Extend Deadline

The deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay has been re-instated and extended to October 21, 2012. Service members and veterans whose military service was involuntarily extended under the “Stop Loss” program between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for special retroactive pay. The special pay is compensation for the hardships the involuntary extensions caused, officials said. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service to receive $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, many eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries are not aware of the benefit. This all-volunteer, non-profit organization provides advanced mobility devices, which used to include the iBOT, to wounded disabled veterans. Sadly, the iBOT, an extremely stable powered wheelchair developed by Dean Kamen, was discontinued in 2009. America’s Huey 091 Foundation is trying to revive the manufacture and maintenance of the iBOT. Check out the website which features a video, introduced and narrated by Gary Sinise, demonstrating the life changing benefits the iBOT has provided to four handicapped veterans. For more information how you can help return the iBOT to production, email Colonel (Ret) Charles Bogle.
