I am very proud to announce that MilitaryConnection.com has been chosen as a recipient of the 2015 User's Choice Award by Weddle's. Weddle's is the largest print publisher of guides to the 200,000 employment-related sites currently operating on the Internet, and has been called the "Zagat of the online employment industry." While our users know that we offer so many other resources on our website in addition to employment, it's always nice to be recognized. With so many employment sites operating on the internet today, it's hard to stand out, and that's why there's no better accolade than recognition from the job seekers and recruiters who use our website. We thank our users for voting for us, and we look forward to maintaining this high level of user satisfaction throughout the coming year.

Questions, Questions...

Your GI Bill Benefits

Your GI Bill Benefits

The Post 9/11 GI Bill affords many great benefits, including tuition, a housing allowance, and a book/supplies stipend. But how do you choose a school that will best meet your needs? What is the best way to use your benefit? How do you connect with other Veterans and become part of that community? Military Connection Staff Writer Joe Silva shares his experiences as a Veteran student who has navigated these waters, having achieved his Bachelor's degree, and steaming full speed ahead (Navy puns intentional, Joe!) towards his Master's. We invite you to read his articles to find answers to your questions.

Vets Serving Vets

VetsCanSave

Now is the Right Time to Buy - or Refinance

Joseph Kelly, founder and President of Vets Can Save, is the proud father of two Army veterans and an active duty Navy Airman. With a profound appreciation for all who serve, past and present, Joseph works diligently to ensure that veterans are aware of all the mortgage benefits they are entitled to through their service. With mortgage rates at their lowest in 18 months, now is a great time to get a quick mortgage “check-up” with no obligation, no cost and without a credit check. Additionally, mortgage insurance rates are also lower, while property values are higher. Of special interest to FHA borrowers is the recent announcement that gives FHA mortgage borrowers an EXTRA ½ percent savings! For more information, click here.

Tax Prep Assistance

More Help, Less Stress

The beginning of the new year signals the start of tax season. Compiling your tax information and documents is a difficult task for anyone. But for military families, this experience can be compounded by tax events such as out of state relocations and other confusing pay and residence issues. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), through Military OneSource, is once again teaming up with H&R Block to offer no-cost tax consultation and no-cost tax preparation and filing to service members and military family members, as well as to Reservists, regardless of activation status. The offer is also extended to surviving spouses and newly separated service members (up to 180 days after their separation). Also, check out some special tax benefits for Armed Forces personnel here.

Mothering During Deployment

Parenting young children is challenging. As a mother, experiencing a deployment can make this challenge even more difficult. However, there are many ways in which mothers can instill resilience in their young children, resulting in confident, strong, and independent children. In order to better understand your journey, Master’s degree candidate Brittni Wessner Blais is inviting you to participate in a research study via a survey. The survey will ask about your experiences as a mother who was deployed while her child(ren) was young. To take the survey or determine your eligibility, click here or email brittniw@iastate.edu. Eligibility Criteria for the Survey: Women current or past enlisted in the military (can be Active Duty, Reservists, and/or National Guard). Experienced a deployment after becoming a mother. Experienced a deployment while having a child between the ages of 2 and 12.

Two Girls, On a Mission

Olivia and Jade Golembiewski are sisters on a mission to thank and support our Military and Veterans. Through their efforts last year, the Macomb, MI pre-teens were able to help Operation Troop Aid send care packages, complete with letters and Valentines from their peers. For 2015, the drive will continue to collect letters and Valentines, donations for the care packages, and Girl Scout cookies. Additionally, Olivia and Jade are organizing a clothing drive to help Disabled American Veterans; they feel that helping the DAV is very important because many of those Veterans sacrificed more than just time served for our country. If you would like to help the girls reach their goal this year, or want additional information, please email them at: bpgfamily@sbcglobal.net.

Looking Forward

What Are The Economics of Veterans for 2015?

Those who have served belong to a fraternal demographic unmatched by any other American society. No other group of former coworkers, schoolmates or teammates share the bond that service members and Veterans share with one another. At the same time, Veterans and current service members, numbering 24 million-strong, enjoy tremendous support from the government and the American public. As we begin 2015, you can review some of the economic predictions for the upcoming year here.
