For many years, April has been designated as the Month of the Military Child, emphasizing the important role military children play in the armed forces community. There are approximately two million military children, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old. Our care of and concern for military children provides comfort to our fighting force, and strengthens the health, security, and safety of our nation's military families. We recognize the sacrifices these children make, and honor them for their character, courage and resilience. Let us hold them in our thoughts and hearts all year round. April is also National Financial Literacy Month, emphasizing the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy financial habits. While the economic outlook seems to be improving, it is still a challenge for some make ends meet. It is important to make every dollar you have stretch as far as possible. First Class Advisory Board

Franchise Opportunities for Veterans Only

JDog Junk Removal & Hauling, dedicated to increasing post-military career opportunities for veterans, has launched the JDog Joint Chiefs Advisory Board, headed by retired Marine Major General Douglas O’Dell and retired Army Captain Larry Liss. With great respect for these two veterans, Founder and CEO of JDog, Army veteran Jerry Flanagan, said, “We are honored to have the mentorship of these two distinguished leaders as we expand the brand to help military personnel across the nation.” Presidential appointee O’Dell served as the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding, following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and was also responsible for U.S. embassy security around the world. He now consults on logistics management, disaster relief operations, and economic development. Liss, one of the most highly decorated helicopter pilots of the Vietnam War, regularly lobbies on behalf of veteran’s affairs and employment issues. For CA Veterans

Veterans Legal Institute

Non-profit Public Interest Law Firm

Veterans Legal Institute (VLI) provides pro bono legal assistance to homeless and low income veterans and service members in Southern California to eradicate barriers to housing, education, employment and healthcare and foster self-sufficiency. VLI also advocates on behalf of its clients by providing community education and policy advocacy in an effort to increase awareness, resources, and overall protections to current and former members of the US military. VLI is highly unique in that it is the only veteran-centered public interest law firm in the nation that provides free legal services to low income and homeless former and active service members. There is a huge gap in need of veterans’ resources provided by those who understand military specific issues, both legal and otherwise, to low income and homeless veterans. Good Read!

A Good Read

Why is The Solder and the Squirrel Relevant?

The Soldier and the Squirrel is not just a book - it is a tool to introduce our youth to the humanity behind the wounded warrior. The story will also open the conversation between parent and child about the very real effects of war, while reminding us all that the greatest blessings and most meaningful moments in life are often the smallest ones. The wounded warrior is today's super-hero. But what about tomorrow? The one thing that should never change is our country's support for our returning wounded, no matter what the reason was for going to war. The Solder and the Squirrel ensures continued support for our wounded veterans of all ages, from all generations, and keeps their sacrifices front and center.

America ICARE

America ICARE

Restoring Hope to Heroes

Purple Heart recipient Joshua Peter's four-year military career ended the day he was hit by a bomb in Iraq, rendering him 100% disabled. Joshua called America ICARE distraught because the family car had broken down, leaving his wife, who is his primary caregiver, unable to take him to job interviews. He also needed money to get the car's registration renewed. America ICARE stepped up to get Joshua back on the road, and ready to meet employers. Recently, Joshua reported that he had been hired as a project coordinator for a consulting company. We are proud to say that our CEO, Debbie Gregory, serves on the board for this wonderful non-profit. For more information, click here.
