Congratulations and thank you to our elected officials for reaching across the aisle and passing the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act. This law will help reduce military and Veteran suicides as it improves access to quality mental health care. Clay Hunt was a Marine Veteran who died by suicide in March 2011 at the age of 28. This young man constantly voiced concerns about the mental health care he was receiving for his PTSD, especially the heavy reliance on medication. There are numerous non-profits working to change the approach, among them Give an Hour, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and the David Lynch Foundation, to name a few. If you (or someone you know) struggle with a mental health issue, please know that you are not alone, and help is available. The Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7, via the internet, telephone or text.

Mortgage Strategies

Mortgage Strategies

Put Yourself in Trusted Hands

It is becoming more and more common for current and potential homeowners to search for mortgages online. While this may be an easy way to obtain information, doing so may put multiple companies in contact with you that haven’t been vetted. You have no idea of each lender’s reputation, experience, or competitiveness. And considering the sensitive information that you will be sharing with any potential mortgage company, you want to look for a trusted recommendation with a sound reputation and valuable experience. At Military Connection, we have seen, first hand, the lengths that VetsCanSave goes to in order to secure a competitive rate, even for those “hard to finance” users. It’s important to note that VetsCanSave will never sell or forward your information to multiple lenders. As the father of three Veterans, VetsCanSave President Joe Kelly has made it his mission to educate consumers on mortgage strategies that increase savings while reducing debt. You can be assured that the team at VetsCanSave will give you the benefit of their many years of experience, along with the highest level of customer service.

Changing the Story

Give An Hour

Join the National Campaign

“The Campaign to Change Direction” is a collection of concerned citizens, nonprofit leaders, and leaders from the private sector who have come together to “change the story” in America about mental health, mental illness, and wellness. The movement aims to allow us to see mental health as having equal value to our physical health, encourage us to care for our mental well-being and the mental well-being of others, and allow us to recognize the signs of emotional suffering in ourselves and others. On March 4th, The Newseum, Annenberg Theater in Washington DC will be the setting for the launch of this important movement. If you would like to attend, click here for complimentary tickets, subject to availability.

For those outside of DC, the event will be live streamed and can be viewed at www.changedirection.org

Reboot Workshop

Reboot on March 9th!

Female Veterans face greater challenges than their male counterparts. Yet there are very few programs to help them re-assimilate into civilian life. To answer the call, National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. (NVTSI) also known as REBOOT, has launched the Women Veterans Initiative. Designed to meet the unique needs of female Veterans as they transition from military to civilian life, the REBOOT Workshop™ is the nation's only transition program that provides women Vets with the tools they need to succeed. The 15-day course of progressive training builds upon the participants' military training, skills, and experience, and comprehensively addresses the personal, social, & professional aspects of military-to-civilian life transition. To enroll in the March 9th session, click here.

War Horse

Easing Transition

For those returning from military service, the transition to civilian life can present certain challenges- finding a job, securing housing and learning different skills. War Horses For Veterans® was created to provide Veterans all across the country with networking support in the special context of an equine bonding experience. Based just outside of Kansas City, Kansas, War Horses for Veterans is a three-day program that offers participants the opportunity to connect with horses, while sharing an experience with their peers, in a safe and comfortable environment. Co-founded in 2014 by Veteran Patrick Benson, the non-profit provides an all-paid networking opportunity for Veterans who meet the criteria. Applicants should be aware that this is not a treatment program, but rather an experience.

Thank You Sec. Gravett

Cal Vet

Welcome Aboard Acting Secretary Endsley

CalVet has flourished under the leadership of Secretary Peter Gravett, a reluctant and humble hero. His leadership over the past four years has greatly benefitted the Veterans of California. During his tenure at CalVet, Gravett expanded the department’s outreach, education, and advocacy in service to California’s nearly two million Veterans and their families. We wish him the best in his retirement. We would also like to welcome Acting Secretary Debbie Endsley. Appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown, Endsley is both the wife and daughter of Veterans. She stated that CalVet was one of the few state departments she wished she had worked for during her 37 year career in public service. We see great things in the future for the state’s Veterans.
