On December 3rd, two Veterans' employment tax credits championed by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) passed the House of Representatives, and will now be sent to the Senate for consideration. At Military Connection, we have been doing our best to keep the Vow to Hire Heroes Extension Act of 2013 front and center in the minds of our readers. We, as a country, have an unprecedented opportunity, as well as a civic obligation, to strengthen the pathways to success for our returning service members. Extending the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and the Employer Wage Credit, the currently expired tax credits that encourage American businesses to hire Veterans and service members, is a step in the right direction. Please join me in contacting your senators at www.senate.gov to urge their support.

Helping Veterans

Los Angeles Stand Down

Los Angeles Stand Down

Although the numbers have decreased, Los Angeles still has the largest population of homeless military Veterans in the nation. The latest homeless count estimates more than 6,300 Veterans are living on L.A. streets. Homeless Vets account for nearly 20% of the people living on the streets and in shelters in Los Angeles. To that end, the first annual Los Angeles Veteran & Families Stand Down will take place December 20-22, 2014. This three-day event will be held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. The location, size and scope of the event will serve both male and female Veterans, as well as their families. For information regarding the event, click here. For more information on becoming a Stand Down sponsor or volunteer, contact Nancy Wolf at 310.744.6501 or email LAStandDown@gmail.com.

Home for Veterans

Community At Its Best

Habitat for Humanity, San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys in collaboration with the California Department of Veterans Affairs is offering an affordable homeownership program for Veterans and their families. Veterans earning $52,000 combined family income annually or more & wishing to live in the Santa Clarita area will pay no more than 30-35% of their monthly income for mortgage, tax, HOA, insurance and water. Adapting the well-tested Habitat Enriched Neighborhood™ model developed by Habitat SF/SCV, homeownership is provided along with transitional training and services to promote self-sufficiency. Partnering with other non-profits, local businesses and community organizations, services include veteran-specific counseling, financial training, health and dental screenings, homework help for the children and much more. Inside the community will be several community parks with a large central playground. For more information, click here.

Looking Out for Veterans

Hats Off to Congresswoman Bustos

Hats Off to Congresswoman Bustos

Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is a champion for Veterans. Last year, following a Veterans' listening tour of her region of Illinois, Bustos introduced H.R. 3649, the Jobs for Heroes Act. This bill extends and expands both the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) for Veterans and active duty service members, and the Employer Wage Credit (EWC) for employees who are active duty members of the uniformed services. Her office is also participating in the Veterans History Project, allowing Veterans and their families to record their stories and preserve them for future generations in the Library of Congress. The project will serve as a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served. For more information, click here.

Highly Rated Charities

There are no shortage of wonderful charities that need financial support. Many military-based organizations honor the sacrifices made by those who serve, past and present, assisting them and their families, both while they serve and also when they return home. It is always a good idea, before giving to any charitable organization, to investigate how much of the money donated actually goes to the cause being supported. Thanks to services such as Charity Navigator, some of that legwork is already done for you. We are very proud that two of our aligned charities, Fisher House Foundation and ThanksUSA, finished in the #1 and #2 positions of military charities, respectively. At Military Connection, we pride ourselves on having a corporate environment that lends itself to serving our audience in numerous aspects, including working with so many great non-profits that truly make a difference.

Express Your Gratitude

Help However You Can

Help However You Can

Why should you support Operation Gratitude? Because there are more than 150,000 American service members deployed far from home and loved ones, most in harm's way. Because they are still sending packages to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to Liberia, Korea and to ships in international waters. Operation Gratitude also sends packages to tens of thousands of Veterans and new recruits here at home. All of our heroes need a reminder that the American people are thinking of them and appreciate their service. Whether you knit a warm scarf, write a letter, donate care package items, give $15 to send one package, $45 to send three packages, or send a package every month of the year for $180, your support of our brave men and women in uniform is always welcome.

Over the past decade, the men and women of the United States military and their families have made and continue to make extraordinary sacrifices to protect our freedom. If you would like to help change lives, your contribution can make a difference. Tell Your Story

Tell Your Story

President Obama just announced the second annual White House Student Film Festival, and he's issuing a call for entries. Every day, young people are making an impact in the lives of others through service and giving back. Volunteering takes so many different forms in our country and is one of the most important experiences that you can have. Service to others and giving back can offer purpose and perspective. You may find that making a difference in your community or in someone else's life is an experience that can make a difference in your own life. Make a three-minute film about the impact of giving back, and it might get a screening at the White House. Now is the perfect time to get started. So what are you waiting for? Lights, camera... action!
